June 1

We had breakfast at a cafe up the hill. The cafe has a wonderful outdoor garden. I dunno about the deer. That part isn't too interesting. The deer is plastic.

Today, we are mostly recovering from the Kinetic Sculpture Race trip.

June 2

This is the cat.

I skipped my knitting group to stay home & sleep.

June 3

This is the first blooming gladiola in my garden.

I went to hospice in the evening.

June 4

This is dull. I'm taking pictures of soup.

It looks unappealing but this is some of the best soup around. I made muligitawny (spelled wrong) soup. This is a spicy Indian lentil soup.

June 5

The photos so far this month feel more like documentation instead of art project. I started doing the daily photo thing not as a journal thing but as a way to encourage myself to see more beauty around me by giving myself a project to find at least one interesting image each day. The project has accomplished that goal. I do see more beauty around me than I did before. This has made my life better. This month's photos, at least the ones to date, seem to be more of a documentation type. These first few days of June feel more like a photographic journal than an art project to encourage creativity.

Well, not all interesting photos go onto this site. For example, the photos from tonight's bachelorette party will not be published here.

About this cat: this is the stray black cat that had taken up residence in our garden until the mockingbird scared it away. Now that the bird is gone, the cat is back.

In the afternoon, we tried to go to a meeting of the Bernal Hill Preservation Society. There were many too many people for the room. A couple of mothers brought their children and decided to put their chairs into an aisle, making it difficult for people to make it around the corner. Then they proceeded to entertain their not-yet-walking children with clanging car keys. The kids squealed and did what kids do when they play: make noise and move around. This was in the middle of a slide show on historical buildings. I believe there are times and places for children. Kids like to play and make noise. I don't believe it is fair to the children to bring them to a public lecture and expect them to be quiet and not disturb anyone trying to pay attention to the speaker. I believe this behavior is mean to the children and disrespectful of the speaker and audience members.

June 6

CalTrain has resumed weekend service. To re-introduce weekend service, CalTrain offered free rides this weekend and next. We tried to re-do our January CalTrain pub crawl. However, we didn't announce it early enough (because we didn't think of it early enough) and there was really too much of a crowd to make it into a group event.

June 7

Kitty likes sitting in a drawer.

June 8

I had a job interview in the morning followed by fancy t-shirt folding at Dive Bar.

June 9

I took a walk around the neighborhood before going to my knitting group. The sky looked like this.

June 10

I had 3.5 hours of job interview today.

I came home & baked 6 mini loaves of banana bread to take to hospice.

At hospice tonight, I was reminded of some of my medical difficulties in 2003. When I've been sick, I've been very appreciative that no one forced me to smile or to eat or to pretend I was feeling better than I really was.

June 11

For the second time this year, a San Bruno bank robber ran from police up 280 onto the Alemany offramp & ditched the vehicle below my house. This time, they got the bank robbers along with two AK-47s.

What is it with San Bruno bank robbers fleeing San Bruno & taking the Alemany exit off 280 when they try to escape? Twice in one year seems like a lot to have armed bank robbers ending up in my backyard.

This photo is of one of the local news stations doing a report from the area.

    June 12

This is an entry from the Power Tools Drag Races . I spent the day in the sun waiting around for the races. They actually only started 2 hours late which is an improvement over last year's 4 hour delay.

In the evening, I went to pick up some milk at the corner store. One of the patrons was trying to convince the clerk that they should lottery tickets because playing the lottery is such an easy way to make money. I think the lottery really is an idiot tax.

    June 12

This is more from the Power Tools Drag Races.

Not everything was a circular saw or a belt sander. This device was a robot which 'walked' slowly. Even though the robot was slow, it still won the heat because the other device was working harder on setting the track on fire than on completing the race. I'm not entirely sure what that other device was. I think there was propane involved.

    June 13

During the middle of the day, I went to my Buddhist study group meeting. In the late afternoon, I rejoined the Power Tools Drag Races. I think this event is axercise in endurance for spectators. Watching the races means standing in the sun for two days straight. The final races didn't happen until 9:30 at night.

    June 14

Today was a lazy day. In the evening, I went to a slide show on the Inner Sunset at the library.

    June 15

We did some more urban exploration. I found this cat on top of the fish box. This was near the Hell's Angel's clubhouse.

    June 15

In wandering around the waterfront, we found this boat.

    June 16

These are some of the gladiolas from my garden.

I baked Straun bread. This is a whole wheat bread with brown rice, polenta, oats and wheat bran, among other flavors. It came out quite well, although I like the beer bread (whole wheat, brown rice, brewer's malt, etc) better.

In the evening, I went to knitting and then to the Ask Dr. Hal show at the Odeon. I asked Dr. Hal when Ronnie actually died. The gameshow host decided that was a good enough question to merit a free shot of Fernat. Fernat is a vodka which tasts a lot like furniture polish. This stuff is evil. I wasn't about to claim the shot. However, we were in the front row. My companions weren't going to let me get away without drinking the shot. The gameshow host came off the stage and stood over me while I drank it.

    Fernat is evil.

    June 17

This is a disk for kitty. She's too big for the cat basket I made her so I tried again & made a disk for her to sit on. This is the result before I put it in the washing machine to felt.

In the evening, I went to hospice.

    June 18

We took another walk around Golden Gate Heights. These trees are at the top of Grandview Park.

After the walk, we went to the Chinese neighborhood to get some sushi at the place run by a bunch of Frenshmen. Yum Yum Fish is really a meat market that also does some sushi.

In the evening, we went to a Dr. Hal & Zero Boy perfomrance.

    June 19

We went to Farmer's Market in the morning.

In the evening, we went to a bachelor party. The groom-to-be was zip-tied (no one had handcuffs) to this wheelchair. Then we took him through the Tenderloin.

    June 20

The morning after the bachelor party, we went to a baby shower. This was one of those mornings where I said "can you drive? I have to finish these." as I knit across the Bay Bridge. We arrived at the shower with five rows to go. I finished the booties and gave them to the Mom-to-be.

    June 21

We had a video/picture viewing night for the people who went on the Kinetic Sculpture group trip.

I made sourdough bread, spinach dip & a lemon pie. The lemons came from my garden.

    June 22

We did an ASL dive bar night. This picture is on the way home. It took me until now (several days later) to realize that the sign is supposed to alert motorists that a children's playground is nearby. This playground is in the middle of the Tenderloin, not a great part of town.

    June 23

I went to my knitting group. Afterword, we ended up at Zeitgeist. The last time I was at Zeitgeist, I had a picture taken of me against this same wall. I was hanging from a cross, wearing a Santa suit, a giant bunny head & a crown of thorns.

    June 24

I finally figured out what to do with the neck on this sweater. I think this means I need to finish it.

    June 25

We took an early morning walk around Bernal Heights. San Francisco fog makes for some beautiful images.

In the afternoon, I worked on a special secret baking project.

    June 26

We went to a wedding in Sonoma. Along the way, we passed what used to be the Sears Point Racetrack. There was a NASCAR event that day. We drove past the RV parking. This reminded me of Burning Man but without the dust.

    June 26

    This is the happy couple.

This is a loaf of bread I baked using a plaster cast as a mold. This was a difficult task, especially since I had to preserve the mold. This was my secret baking project this week.

    June 27

This is the Dykes on Bikes aka Women's Motorcycle Contingent leading the gay pride parade in San Francisco. The parade seemed very short this year with not many floats and not too many colorful costumes.

    June 28

I'm knitting a complicated cable sweater. This is part of the sleeve.

    June 29

I finished the white mohair cardigan. This is an oversized sweater that will be helpful when I need an extra layer. The sweater is much too big for me but that's intentional.

    June 30

This is some construction in downtown San Francisco. The dome is historical so it's being preserved.

We went to see Farenheit 9/11. I am glad the movie got made and is getting widespread distribution. I still don't care for Michael Moore.
