May 1

I cooked: whole wheat bread, hummus, Italian herb salad dressing, oyster mushroom scramble with eggs from the neighbor's chickens.

These are the oven mitts drying. The mitts are effectively heavy sponges so it takes a couple days for them to dry.

May 2

Today's cooking: muligitawny soup, pesto with basil from the Farmer's Market

I am thinking of doing a photo scavenger hunt thing. This is a project to inspire creativity. Details will be here.

My birthday is coming. OK, not for a while but this one, I want to plan for.

This picture is of the garden. Today, we attached the climbing rose to the fence so the rose will grow over the fence.

May 3

I baked sourdough rosemary oregano bread.

These are felted oven mitts. They are finally done.

May 4

This is the site of an old bar that was closed for many decades. Now the building is gone.

May 4

We found freeway construction nearby.

This was near South Park near downtown. We tried to do the South Park walk with City Guides as a part of their special May walks.

May 5

I went to my knitting circle gathering. Afterword, we went to the Odeon for the "Ask Dr. Hal" show. Many attendees boarded the Chicken Bus for a bowling trip. I don't do late nights very well so I went home.

May 6

Are you thinking of getting a Maytag Neptune washing machine? Don't do it. I have one & it's failed with a well known design flaw that Maytag will not admit exists. If you're at all considering Maytag, try a Google search for a well documented history of the problem with the poor door latch design that blows a resistor on the control board. I've tried calling Maytag. They want me to pay for a service call. I've already sunk enough money into this very expensive machine. Next time I buy an expensive appliance, I'll pay more attention to previously reported problems. And I will NOT be buying Maytag again. I've learned my lesson.

May 6

I'm working on another complex cable sweater. This has a similar design to the cable hat I recently finished.

May 7

Today's baking includes whole wheat/buckwheat/rye/oatmeal bread. The dough seems a bit heavy but I am hopeful that it will turn into something edible.

Other cooking: 3 pans of jello for a friend having surgery today, a brown rice quiche thing with roasted tomatoes, tabouli & babaganoush (I can't spell it but I can make it.)

3 pans of jello is pretty easy compared to last July's project involving making 14 GALLONS of jello.

We took a walk around the Mission & the edge of the Castro. This is the Golden Fire Hydrant, the one hydrant that remained working during the 1906 fire that followed the 1906 quake.

May 8

We took a walk through the Inner Sunset with City Guide.

These palm trees probably seemed like a good idea when they were planted. Now they just look kinda silly.

May 8

These utility markings seemed kinda bright & colorful on the pavement.

May 9

This is me getting ready for my Soapbox Derby run.

May 9

I had style points but no speed. Not going very fast was actually a good thing. My 'vehicle' didn't have brakes.

May 10

These are more roses from my garden.

May 11

We did another City Guides walk around the Ferry Building. On the way there, we saw this house. I think someone still lives there. There is a not-dead house plant visible in one of the windows. They have abandoned the yard to fennel & stray cats.

May 11

On the way home, we saw this interesting paint job. San Francisco has some interestingly painted houses.

May 12

This is some of the first yarn I ever bought. I'd tried to knit a blanket with not-good results. Instead, I unravelled the blanket. Now I am re-using the yarn for a complicated cable sweater.

May 13

This is part of the quest for the perfect shoe.

May 13

This house is in Oakland.

Today, I baked a loaf of rosemary sourdough and a loaf of whole wheat bread. I think I now have a good recipe for whole wheat bread. I'd thought getting sourdough down was difficult. That was easy compared to whole wheat.

May 14

I came out to the garden and discovered the passionflower had been planted.

May 14

The climbing rose is really starting to climb. Having wire in place for an anchor helps.

May 14

What is this bird? I think it has a nest in the lemon tree. This bird has taken to dive bombing me when I go into the garden. This is making my garden a little bit dangerous.

May 14

Yeah, it's yet-another-garden-shot.

I couldn't resist. I like my garden, especially this time of year.

May 15

We did a walk through Visitacion Valley through City Guides.

May 16

There were a lot of salmon (25 or so) for this year's Bay to Breakers race. We did the 'race' as Breakers to Bay because salmon swim upstream.

May 17

I'm living a Monty Python skit but instead of a vicious rabbit, I seem to have been 'adopted' by a vicious bird.

May 18

This was a day-o-errands. We did some MIS work at a friend's house & got a tour of the garden which is where this picture came from.

We also bought a 90 gallon plastic storage container which I have now filled with yarn. We also bought pinwheels for the Mockingbird battle. We also looked for, but did not find, a disco ball. We're going to unleash the power of disco on the mockingbird. The plan is to erect at 20 foot high pipe (bought the materials today) which will be taller than the lemon tree. The hanging disco ball will confuse both bird and neighbors. I don't much care what the neighbors think. I do want the bird to be confused enough to leave.

May 19

Funny thing, the mockingbird seems to have disappeared. I've been in the back yard & not been dive bombed once. I see one bird hanging out on the roof of the neighbor's house but I have not been attacked today.

May 20

The gladiolas are about to bloom in my garden.

In the evening, I went to my hospice shift.

May 21

This is the cat sitting on her perch, watching the bird from a safe vantage point.

May 22

We were walking home and I saw these clouds.

May 23

We went to a BBQ

I baked this giant loaf of sourdough bread.

May 24

This is the cat.

May 25

We did another City Guides walk through the Financial District.

May 25

In the evening, we went to Wild Side West to make kinetic sculptures at the evening Dive Bar gathering.

May 26

After a group lunch, we walked home past a field of fennel.

I work hard to keep the fennel out of my yard. There is always some fennel. This is a continuous battle for me. The fennel keeps trying to take over my garden.

Later in the evening, I went to my knitting group.

May 27

I baked this bread, a variation on rye & pumpernickel.

I also baked some white rolls and 6 mini loaves of banana bread.

In the evening, I went to hospice.

May 29

We went to the Kinetic Sculpture Race in Arcata.

May 30

This is the Subaru going into the water at the first water portion of the Kinetic Sculpture Race.

May 30

This is 'Gourd of the Rings' at the Kinetic Sculpture Race.

May 31

On the way home, we went through the Avenue of the Giants.
