January 1
For New Year's Day, I tried walking up to Holly Park to take pictures of the sunrise. The picture I took out of my bedroom window is the best one of the lot.

January 2
I like the shape of this tree.

January 8
We took a group field trip to the DiRosa Art Preserve.
While most people in the group were quite appreciative of the art, I didn't get much of it. While I think that much of it was probably very therapeutic for the artist, I didn't understand why anyone else would find it interesting. There is something about modern art that I just don't understand.
While I believe it is important for people to live creative lives, I don't know when that creative output crosses the line into art and makes it into a gallery. Maybe I am generalizing here. I know it is important for me to live a creative life. I do not know if that is generally true.
Why do people collect art? And what makes something 'art'? These are probably questions appropriate to an Art Appreciation 101 class.

We met some friends for dinner and then ended up at the Gold Dust, one of my favorite bars in San Francisco. It may be a tourist hangout but its also a comfortable local place.

January 10
We went looking for an abandoned refrigerator for a friend's art project. We found this on the road in the industrial district.
The dead refrigerator (not this one, another one) ended up in a group art show with a bunch of modern art. Once again, I just didn't understand much of the work. While it may have been very therapeutic for the artist to creative, why would anyone else care?
I could ask the same question of this web site. I find it interesting to do it. Taking the photos has been a very helpful assignment for me. But I don't know why anyone else would find this interesting. In fact, I don't know if anyone else ever reads this. I may well be talking to myself. But that doesn't matter. Yes, I publish this web page but I mostly do it so I have a framework around which to do something with my daily photos. This keeps me looking for interesting things in the world every day. I don't know why anyone else would be interested.

This is the door to Mervyn's, a literal hole in the wall bar in Mountain View. We went on a scouting expedition for the CalTrain Highball Express. When we put events like this together, it is good to scout the route first.

January 12
We went looking for a bar in San Bruno for the CalTrain Highball Express. I picked a bar based on the police reports. This is a Bollywood Fashion store near the bar we picked. I picked the bar based on the number of police reports.

This is a lemon in my garden. It may look like an orange but this is really a lemon. This is a Meyer's lemon.

January 14
Yeah, it's more cat-blogging. How's that for dull?
|
 |
January 15
The cat does some funny things. She often burrrows underneath blankets. I think she's trying to tell me to turn up the heat.

January 16
My garden is starting to bloom.

January 17
We did the CalTrain Highball Express today. The turnout wasn't as high as last year. Still, we had some interesting adventures. The first bar had a drunk cab driver. He was too drunk to walk, let alone go anywhere near his cab. That bar also had a crazy guy who didn't like us for some reason. He kept making death threats.
A few bars later, we found the bar where the bartender was tethered to an oxygen tank. She served drinks while walking up and down the bar attached to an oxygen tank. That didn't seem to slow her down. We asked about it and she said the tube is long enough that it isn't a problem. Fortunately, California doesn't allow smoking in bars anymore. Otherwise, I don't think she would be able to tend bar with her oxygen tank.

This is the cat in a hat that I knit. This is actually a baby hat, not a cat hat. The cat didn't like wearing the hat. The hat didn't stay on the cat's head for very long.

January 19
My garden is blooming.
I went to my knitting group tonight.

January 20
This is another lily from my garden.
Tonight, I went to my hospice volunteer shift. The nurse sent two of us on an errand to pick up some supplies from Central Supply. At the counter, the man asked us what we needed. We said "shrouds". The hospital has a special 'shroud kit' which is used every time someone dies. The kit includes a shroud, a body bag, tags for identifying the body and some tape. The clerk asked us how many we needed. When we said "ten" he did a double take and then we explained we were from the hospice ward. Four people had died in just the past week. He objected to the use of the word 'die.' He thought we should say "passed on" or some other euphemism. I guess it was easier for him to give us ten shrouds if he didn't think it was really for people who had died.
Sometimes, I forget that the other wards in this hospital don't have frequent deaths.

This building has always interested me. This strange 'Glass Slipper Inn' is in the middle of Silicon Valley. It looks kinda out of place.

January 22
We took a walk around the Mission looking for shoes with a Velcro closure. They aren't in style anymore, other than for children. These shoes were destined to be nailed to a rowing machine. Style didn't matter, only Velcro.
This is one of the murals in the Mission.

I've been knitting again. These are gifts for friends.

This is a very small park at the top of Wool Street.

January 25
I made a salad with butter lettuce, toasted pistachios and citrus, including this blood orange.
|

January 26
I went to my knitting group in the evening.
During the day, we stopped by Sun Yat Sen park. This is a strange little park near the Financial District. People walk by it all the time and have no idea this park exists.

January 27
I went to my hospice shift in the evening.

January 29
This is a climbing rose in my garden. In a few months, this will be covered with purple flowers.
I have a head cold that's just enough to be annoying.
Low iodine diets suck. :-(

January 30
We took a stairwalk around Bernal Heights. This is a panorama view from the top of Bernal Hill.
We ran into two other couples doing the same walk with the same book. I think stairwalks are getting trendy in San Francisco.

January 31
We did some exploration around San Francisco. This boat has been abandoned for some time.
