We took another train trip. This picture is of the salt factory. We also went through what's left of Drawbridge, the Silicon Valley ghost town.

Daylight Saving Time started this morning. I was woken up just before 2am so I could watch this clock reset itself. The clock gets its time from a radio signal. As expected, at 2am, the clock reset itself to 3am. Play the QuickTime movie to watch the hands move! This was very geeky.

My garden produces amazing numbers of flowers this time of year. All of these came from my garden.

We went to the pound, hoping to come home with kittens. Unfortunately, it's not quite kitten season yet. We came home with no kitties.

My morning commute became convoluted when yet another person committed suicide my jumping in front of a train. The stretch of track between San Jose and San Francisco has a remarkably high suicide rate.

This was on every seat on CalTrain this morning. One thing I'll say for CalTrain: they know how to let the riders know what's happening. Even as the events were unfolding, they let passengers know which trains would be going where with an estimated travel time.

All of these flowers came out of my garden.
In the evening, we watched Hell House, a documentary about a Texas Halloween haunted house where they show visitors where sinners go: hell. Why does Christianity, especially the Evangelical branches, rely so heavily on the threat of hell? What if hell didn't exist?

I'm doing my taxes. This isn't pleasant. At least there are pleasant things growing in my garden.

This is a cherimoya. This is an experiment in "eating food we've never tried before." We bought this at the grocery store this morning. Then we looked at it for a while. It makes me think of alien pods. I'm waiting for a monster to jump out of this. After going 0 for 5 in finding anything about this in any of my gourmet vegie cookbooks, we looked it up on the Internet. I guess this is a kind of a fruit. This means we probably shouldn't deep fry it. We weren't planning on that, anyway.

Tonight we watched Plan 9 from Outer Space. I had attempted to watch this movie several years ago. I couldn't finish it. The movie was too bad. This time, we watched the feature commentary on the DVD before watching the movie. Now the movie almost made sense. I understood that the movie was made long after Bela Lugosi had died. Now I understood why the headline character made only brief recognizable appearances. The rest of the time, Bela's character was played by someone who didn't look very much like Bela Lugosi and who kept a cape over his face. I knit several rows of my complicated Aran sweater during the movie. The time wasn't wasted.

I had a conversation today about how to teach a small child how to be optimistic. I think being optimistic or pessimistic isn't the point. I find it more useful to understand how I relate to whatever's happening. For example, being optimistic won't stop me from being hit by a truck. Being overly optimistic might stop me from seeking necessary medical care. If I acknowledge whatever is going on without trying to spin the situation, then I have a better chance of accurately understanding the situation and the consequences. After being hit by a truck, I might become depressed. If I were trying to be optimistic, I might criticize myself for not being cheerful. This approach would likely send me deeper into depression as I blame myself for not being cheerful. If I'm more focused on my relationship with whatever is going on, then I am more likely to recognize the situation (I"m depressed), the cause (the accident), and act appropriately.
