BAR - 2695 Mission

Comic Cut-Ups (Burroughs style)

It was claimed that some of William Burroughs 'genius' came from a technique he used called 'cut-ups'. He would write out narratives and prose onto paper, then cut the paragraphs into different sections and splice the results back together randomly to create altogether new text. Burroughs would clean up the grammar and from this jumble of thoughts develop new ideas. The results speak for themselves.

We'll perform something similar, although with far less effort because our source material already exists in the form of daily newspaper comics. Bring along a pair of scissors and some comic pages and see how you can mix up the panels to tell a different story. Alter history by sending Spiderman back in time to interact with Prince Valiant. Insert Rolf Fusco into a Zippy strip to further confuse the dialog. Perhaps Cathy and Garfield will collide and generate a punch-line that is actually funny.

Bring scissors, clear tape, newspapers, and your twisted imagination. If you need a heavy dose of morphine beforehand to get into the proper Burroughs spirit, then so be it, but for everyone else, there's always
alcohol...
