Glen Park Station - 2816 Diamond

Sugar Cube Igloos (and other polar geegaws)

Ok, it's not winter anymore, at least here in the Northern Hemisphere. But the cruel frigid weather and season of no sun is creeping ever closer to Antarctica. For the likes of Scott, Amundsen, and Shackleton we'll pay tribute to the heroic age of Antactic exploration by constructing sugar-cube igloos and recounting tales of dog teams, blubber stoves, and long months without baths. Grab a bottle of glue so you can help construct survival dwellings for the frost-bitten souls. Bring tiny seals or penguins to add some much-needed meat to their diet. Pretend you've been stranded on the Ross Ice Shelf with no hope of rescue, only days or even hours away from deadly hypothermia, and then melt back to the present day, secure in the warmth we'll have by doing all this in front of the bar's working fireplace. Then tip back a Bud Ice and thank god that you weren't crazy enough to go to such a place in the dead of winter.

We'll bring sugar cubes and some glue, although you should bring more if you want to construct anything really elaborate. Look around for other polar-related crap to bring along if you really want to get into it.

There's also an ulterior motive for this week's theme. Later on Tuesday evening, we'll be having a private TV party nearby to watch a NOVA program on Earnest Shackleton's adventures in Antarctica (http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/shackleton/). His story is an incredible saga of survival against the worst possible odds and environment - the kind of true-life tale that you would never believe if it weren't so well documented. We'll provide more details to anyone who shows up at the bar.
