Parkway Lounge - 1850 Park Blvd (Oakland)

Protest Signs and/or Throat Singing

San Francisco's Best Protester, Frank Chu, will be making a court appearance on the 30th to settle up with the Gold Dust Lounge. (If you don't know who he is look here, and then follow the other links: http://www.12galaxies.20m.com/ ) Frank is seeking $50 because "the owner refused service similared to the Hyatt Regency." We're going to use Frank's favorite medium, namely the protest sign, to show our support, and hopefully we'll similaredly receive good service at the Hyatt Regency some day.

(This is not to say that we have anything against the Gold Dust, which itself may become a dive-bar location in the future, but one never wants to turn down an occasion to show solidarity with Frank Chu, protester extraordinaire, and occasional drinking buddy:

Bring cardboard, a yard stick or other staff for your sign, and any press-on letters or other graphic material you'd like to use. We'll supply samples of previous Frank Chu-isms as well as methods for generating your own.

Second billing for the evening is a film - Genghis Blues - at the Parkway Theater about a local blues player who taught himself throat singing. The film info can be found here (this announcement is just chock full of URLs to track down!):

The film starts at 9:15, but we'll want to arrive earlier to get good seats and (here's the dive-bar tie-in...) drink! Yes, the Parkway is one of the few movie theaters anywhere that serves beer, which is reason enough to attend. But the film is a great story in itself and one that merits viewing whenever it rolls around to the repertory theaters. Admission is $8, but the earlier gathering at the bar is free. Come to one or both events, or stay home and organize your sock drawer.

Locations:

Continuing with our 'lounge' trend, we'll be hitting another one this week. It's right near the theater, and apparently doubles as an emetic:

The Parkway Theater is a few doors away. Directions (for both locations, actually) can be found here:
