Clark Island

We spent two days at Cypress Head. Then we got up at 4am to be on the water by 5am (after breakfast & breaking camp & loading the kayak) to paddle to Clark Island. I'd never realized how important tides & currents are. We couldn't just decide to start paddling at any old time of day. Watching the race that developed off Cypress Head as the tide changed convinced me of that!
My paddling was getting better. I was only hitting the side of the boat about every 5th stroke. I was still working on the 'continuous motion' part. At one point, I said I was getting tired. My companion replied, "Well...you can't." So I kept paddling. After all, we were in the middle of a shipping lane. While no oil tankers or barges were in sight, this still wasn't a place to take a rest.
We arrived Clark Island by 9:30am. The first thing we saw were a lot of signs saying 'no camping.' Turns out that a large storm had hit the island the previous December. Most of the campsites had been destroyed. Two were left. We took the big one. No one else ever showed up to take the other one. For the most part, we had the island to ourselves.

This is the view from the campsite.

Part of the reason for the solitude was the weather. After getting camp set up, it was time for a nap. And then it started to rain. We didn't get out of the tent until the next day. Here's the view from inside the tent.
Finally, the weather began to break. When the sun came out, we spread everything out to dry. And tried to start a fire. And then the sun even came out!
We got to enjoy some sun...and even a sunset from the west facing beach!
