Frog Hat

This is a frog hat of my own design. Yes, it looks stupid. That's the idea.

I used Red Heart (oh my!) SuperSport 3 ply, no dye lot worsted weight, color 0687 Grass Green. The main body is on #6 needles. I'm getting 3.75 stitches/inch. For the legs, I wanted them to be stiff & stick out from the main body so they are on #4 needles.

There are 84 stitches around the main part of the body. For the legs, I knit 15, set aside 6 for the legs, knit 15, 6 for legs, etc. When I put those six stitches onto a leg-needle (#4 double point), I knit into the back of the sixth stitch to add another stitch. Then I 'cast-on' another 5 so that I had twelve stitches in the round for each frog leg. I knit those in the round until they seemed long enough and then did something for the ends. Each one is a little bit different - as far as decreases or tentacles or an attempt at webbing.

For the mouth, I started with 22 stitches, centered around the two legs that match. I did a round of short rows, every 2 stitches. This gives the frog a goiter or second chin. Then I knit out, decreasing at the edges on every knit row until I had a triangle and about 4 stitches left. Then I switched to red and reversed the process to increase the number of stitches until I got from the starting 4 back to the original 22 except that I had 28 at one point. Somehow, I kept increasing when I shouldn't have been increasing. This makes the inside of the frog's mouth more poofy than it should be.

For another frog, I'd also do more in green instead of starting directly with the red. As it is, the red interior of the mouth is the first thing to draw the eye. It stands out more than I think it should. I tried to remedy this with some interior stitching, pulling some stitches closer to each other but the red mouth is still dominant.

I didn't do short rows on the top of the mouth. Next frog, assuming there is another frog, will have this feature. As it is, the top of the frog mouth is flat. I think it should have a bump or three, like a real frog.

For the rest of the body, I kept knitting in the round until the frog seemed big enough. In retrospect, I should have made it longer. I ended up going a double decrease at four points on the frog's head. While it gives the frog body some distinct lines and obvious places for eyes, it also made the top kinda short. Next time, I'd do a different ending and/or make the body longer.

Eyes are still to be found. This frog hat should have spherical google eyes.
